The dry winter season brings with it the imminent threat of bush fire, necessitating the planning of control and prevention measures. The Jafuta team fight fires in the Kazuma and Forestry areas, sometimes having to work all the way through to the national border with Botswana.

They make firebreaks in autumn - an arduous physical task of cutting back kilometres of brush along vulnerable areas to prevent any fires that do start from crossing over - by creating a gap clear of flammable materials.

The team also constructs and clears bush access roads in the Kalisosa Vlei and the southern section of the Victoria Falls National Park during winter when the roads are dry, both for tourist use and to ensure that rangers can reach all areas quickly and safely as required.
