Nutiritional Literacy
In many rural communities, food scarcity and limited access to protein mean families must rely on what is affordable and readily available. A traditional maize meal porridge is commonly eaten daily because it is filling and inexpensive, yet on its own it provides very limited nutritional value, especially for growing children. With meat being a very occasional luxury, understanding how to create balanced, nutritious meals from everyday foods becomes especially important – particularly for growing children.
Jafuta Foundation’s Nutritional Literacy Programme equips teachers and community members with practical knowledge about nutrition, dietary diversity, and child development. The programme focuses on identifying affordable, locally grown foods that provide essential nutrients, and on simple preparation methods that maximise nutritional value.
Through workshops, demonstrations, and community engagement, families learn how to improve household diets, support children’s growth, and strengthen overall health. By building nutritional knowledge alongside food security initiatives, Jafuta Foundation helps communities make the most of available resources and improve long-term wellbeing..
